SAN FRANCISCO -- A coyote sighting in San Francisco's Sunset District this morning should not cause alarm to city residents, an Animal Care and Control lieutenant said.
The report came in sometime before 9 a.m. from someone who saw a coyote crossing the street in the area of Lincoln Way and Sunset Boulevard, said Lt. Le-Ellis Brown.
He said coyote sightings are reported nearly every day in the city.
"They're all around San Francisco, from Golden Gate Park to Bernal Heights to Diamond Heights," Brown said.
Sightings have become a bit more scattered with the recent end of "pupping season," Brown said.
Animal Care and Control officers take reports of sightings and use a map for coyote tracking, but don't respond unless the coyote is reported to be aggressive.
Coyote attacks in the city are rare, as the animals are typically reclusive and not aggressive.
Animal Care and Control officials advise residents who encounter a coyote to yell, wave their hands in the air or throw small rocks to frighten the animal but not injure it.
Residents are advised not to feed coyotes or let pets interact with them.
