Man arrested for assaulting girlfriend

PETALUMA -- Police found a 28-year-old man hiding in some bushes near a creek early this morning in Petaluma and arrested him for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Just before 2:45 a.m., police received a call from a family member of the victim stating that a woman had been assaulted by her boyfriend, Sgt. Marty Frye said.

When officers arrived to the 500 block of Sutter Street, they learned the suspect, Carlos Martinez, had already left the area.

The victim had been stuck repeatedly on her face and body with a belt and had been thrown to the ground, Frye said. The woman was able to fight Martinez off and attempted to call police with her cell phone, but Martinez allegedly threw the phone to the ground.

The victim woke a family member who called police. The victim sustained minor injuries, but she refused medical attention.

Officers established a perimeter around the area to search for Martinez. At about 4:45 a.m., officers located him hiding in bushes about four blocks from where the assault occurred, Frye said.

Police discovered the Petaluma resident had an outstanding no-bail warrant for his arrest out in Sonoma County. Martinez was booked at the Sonoma County Jail.
