25,000 lights installed on Bay Bridge cables

Friday, January 04, 2013

Crews have finished installing 25,000 LED lights on the vertical cables on the western span of the Bay Bridge. The Bay Lights project will be the world's largest light sculpture at almost two miles wide and 500 feet high. The lights will flash in ever-changing patterns to honor the bridge's 75th anniversary.

"It's intelligent lighting, so each one can be individually controlled with a lot of accuracy. So that is what is really unique about it. That involves doing a big network and data. It's a lot of things that most people won't be aware of at all," said artist Leo Villareal.

The plan is to finish the construction in February. They plan on flipping the switch on March 5 and it will be running for two years.
