ABC7 looks back at NUMMI

GM, Toyota and UAW announcement of a joint venture auto plant in Fremont made headlines. The Fremont auto plant got a makeover before the NUMMI joint venture opened in 1984. The Japanese style of auto manufacturing places a focus on teamwork and equality. NUMMI supervisors got one-on-one training at Toyota headquarters in Japan before the plant opened in 1984. A female auto worker was a rare sight in Japan in 1984 when NUMMI workers were there getting training. NUMMI supervisors sent to Japan for one-on-one training at Toyota headquarters received a warm homecoming.

In honor of the NUMMI plant closing at the end of this month, ABC7 went back into our video vault to bring back the stories we did in 1984 about the opening of NUMMI.
