Suspect wanted in Black Friday shooting surrenders

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A police standoff in Oakland with a shooting suspect ended peacefully Thursday morning. Police say the 29-year-old suspect, Detwone Watson, was involved in a robbery and shooting outside a San Leandro Walmart store on Black Friday.

At 106th Ave. and MacArthur Blvd., San Leandro police received a tip that Watson was inside a house there. When police got there, they told everyone to get out and everyone did, except for the suspect. So the SWAT team was called in. They stood outside the house for hours until Watson finally came out without incident. He was taken into police custody.

Shooting victim Christopher Murillo and his family gave a press conference in Hayward. Murillo had a visible scar on his neck where he was shot. A cousin of Murillo's described what that situation was like when the shooting happened on Black Friday.

"It all happened within seconds. It was a split [second] decision. We were basically fighting for our lives. We didn't know if they were going to take us out, right there or then after we gave them our stuff. It's hard. It's really hard, but by the grace of God we're here and living strong," said the cousin.

"It's scary that it did happen and it's sad that is happened, but it could have happened to anyone. I'm just glad to be here," said Murillo.

Murillo said he has no strength in his right arm and cannot feel his fingers. He's not sure when he'll be able to work again, but he said he is thankful to the police for this arrest.

"I thank the San Leandro Police Department for making the arrest and perusing the case until they got the gunman, but there's still two more suspects out there," said Murillo.

Surveillance video captured what happened at that Walmart. There is another man in custody, but police are still looking for two other suspects involved in the shooting. The public is urged to call police if they have any information on the other two suspects.

"We are still looking into the identities of those suspects. We do have some information that we're following up on, but we still need the public's help in helping us catch the final two suspects," said San Leandro Police Sgt. Ted Henderson.

Watson is set to be arranged on Monday and police say he does have an extensive criminal history.
