Suspect in standoff with police in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A standoff is underway in Oakland and still going on as of 1 a.m. The suspect appears to be barricaded in a home after firing at an Alameda County Sheriff's deputy.

The standoff is happening on the 500 block of High Street, next to Interstate-880. Police cordoned off a wide area around the home where the suspect was hold up.

It all began around 8 p.m. on 41st and International Boulevard when an Alameda County Sheriff's deputy spotted a suspected stolen car. The deputy attempted to get the driver to pull over, but two passengers in the car chose to get out of the vehicle and run. The driver then continued driving and the deputy followed him until the driver got out of the car in front of a home on High and Jensen streets. Police say that's when he shot at the deputy firing off several rounds.

We were told the deputy did not fire back.

"We think at that time [the deputy] ducked for cover and when he came up the guy was parked very close to the house that he ultimately went into, so [the deputy] didn't have a chance. The deputy is OK. He's being interviewed by our investigators now," said Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. JD Nelson.

The deputy was not hurt and the suspect is hold up inside a home on High and Jensen streets. Police say he released a woman and child from the home earlier in the evening and held an adult male hostage for hours Monday night. He finally let the hostage go some time after midnight. There is some relationship between the suspect and the man he held hostage, but to what extent is unknown.

SWAT team negotiators are talking to the suspect via cellphone in hopes of convincing him to surrender.

"The hostage situation is one suspect. We are considering him armed and dangerous. He did shoot at the Alameda County deputies this evening. He is in the home with another male adult. We have established communication with him. We're in the process of having that communication and dialogue with the suspect," said Oakland Police Officer Johnna Watson in her 11 p.m. update.
