One person in custody after standoff in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. -- One person has been taken into custody and another remains at large after a police standoff in East Oakland that began Monday and lasted into this morning, Oakland police said.

On Monday afternoon, police surrounded a home in the 2300 block of East 24th Street where two suspects believed to have been involved in shooting at a California Highway Patrol car on Saturday night had barricaded themselves around 3:15 p.m., Oakland police said.

Officers on patrol had spotted the suspects in the area and there was a brief foot chase before they holed themselves up inside the residence, police said.

A Fremont police SWAT team responded, as did the CHP, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Oakland Housing Authority and the Oakland police Gang Intelligence Task Force.

The standoff ended early this morning, and police said one person was in custody and one was still being sought. No further details were immediately available.

Authorities believed the two suspects were involved in shooting at a CHP car in Oakland late Saturday. No one was injured in the shooting.

Two men have already been arrested in connection with that incident, in which the windows of a CHP car were shot out while the officers were attempting to make a traffic stop.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. near the High Street on-ramp to Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.

A short time earlier, a CHP officer had attempted to pull over a van whose driver was not wearing a seat belt in the area of 54th Avenue and International Boulevard, Morgan said. The driver wouldn't stop, and a short chase ensued.

During the pursuit, a black Acura started ramming the patrol car, and the officer broadcast a call for backup, Morgan said.

The driver of the Acura rear-ended the patrol car several more times on 42nd Street near Highway 880 and a man inside the Acura shot at the patrol car, shattering the rear window but missing the officer.

Both the Acura and the van involved in the chase fled the scene, speeding onto southbound Highway 880 via the High Street exit, Morgan said.

Officers located the van a short time later in a parking lot near 66th Avenue and Highway 880. The van's two occupants were arrested.

The Acura was found at a Shell gas station near East 10th Street, and officers determined that it had been reported stolen.
