OAKLAND (KGO) -- Hundreds of people hit the streets of Oakland Saturday to take a stand against human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Volunteers, advocates, and survivors marched along International Boulevard. Demonstrators say girls and boys are being sold every day on that thoroughfare. The goal of the march was to raise awareness about human trafficking and urge voters to support Proposition 35 on the November ballot.
"Proposition 35 is going to allow Californians to fight better against human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of your women and children," said Daphne Phung, founder and executive director of the group, California Against Slavery.
If approved by voters, the legislation would increase penalties for human trafficking and require those convicted to register as sex-offenders.
