Public meeting Monday on Chevron Refinery Fire

RICHMOND, Calif. -- Richmond residents will get a chance to hear local, state and federal investigators' latest findings on the massive Aug. 6 fire at the Chevron refinery at a meeting on Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium and Convention Center at 403 Civic Center Plaza.

Representatives from Contra Costa Health Services, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office will be on hand to give updates and discuss future actions related to the fire, according to Richmond city officials.

Michael Kent, executive assistant for the county's Hazardous Materials Commission, said the community meeting will "bring all the agencies together to talk about what they've been working on."

This afternoon, the hazardous materials commission will hear a brief a recap of the main findings about the causes and implications of the refinery fire by state and federal investigators.

The topics will include the levels of pollutants released during and after the massive blaze, which broke out at one of the refinery's crude oil units the evening of Aug. 6, as well as the hazards refinery workers faced during the fire.
