FREMONT, Calif. -- Police officers shot and killed a domestic violence suspect in Fremont late Sunday night while he allegedly pursued his estranged wife with a knife, a police spokeswoman said.
Police responded around 11 p.m. to a home in the 4500 block of Central Avenue where a woman had called to report that her roommate's estranged husband was attacking the roommate, Fremont police Officer Geneva Bosques said.
Officers arriving at the home saw a female victim running out of the front door followed by the suspect, who was naked and wielding a knife, Bosques said.
The suspect continued to chase the victim while brandishing the knife. When he failed to comply with police's repeated commands to drop the weapon, two officers fired at the suspect, hitting him, Bosques said.
The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old San Jose resident, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The victim also went to a hospital to be evaluated but did not appear to have been injured.
Central Avenue was closed between Logan and Glenmoor drives as of 6 a.m. as police examined the crime scene, and is expected to remain closed for several more hours.
Bosques said both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, following departmental policy after an officer-involved shooting.
Police are not releasing those officers' names, but said that one has been in law enforcement for more than 20 years, while the other is a three-year veteran.
The incident will be investigated by both the Fremont Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, Bosques said.
