Banquet held for fallen CHP Officer Youngstrom

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) -- A special banquet in San Ramon was held tonight in for CHP Officer Kenyon Youngstrom. He was killed in the line of duty in September during a traffic stop near Alamo. Youngstrom's wife, Karen Youngstrom, was the honored guest of the event.

"I think my husband would be truly touched by it all," said Karen.

Officer Youngstrom was shot down during a traffic stop just off the 680 freeway near Alamo this September. The man who shot him was killed at the scene by another officer, but Youngstrom held on until the next day when he died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Friday night's event honors Youngstrom's service. The aim of this benefit is to raise money for Youngstrom's family, but his wife tells us that the fact that so many people have turned out to show their support, is especially touching.

"We're just overwhelmed with how much people have shown their love and support for us. It's really just beautiful," said Karen.

About 100 people bought tickets for the event. The woman who put together this banquet didn't know officer Youngstrom or his wife Karen before Friday, but she is married to a law enforcement officer, so she wanted to help in any way possible.

"I would just only hope that the community comes together on a regular basis for anyone in those shoes and we just want to give her so much support and love," said event organizer Carolyn Wilson.

Youngstrom's absence is something his family still struggles with, but on this occasion, his wife felt compelled to be here.

"Trying to control myself and my emotions too, but mostly, just wanting to be here because I know that everyone is really just wanting to support us and I wanted to let everyone know that we truly appreciate it," said Karen.
