Livermore man caught on video disputes theft charge

A Livermore man at the center of a theft investigation says the whole thing is a big misunderstanding.

A security video of the incident in question was posted on YouTube. According to Livermore police, the man in the video entering the front porch of a home on Walnut Street and taking items is Stephen Ruth.

Ruth lives in the same neighborhood as the victim, and police say he has admitted to being the person in the video. But Ruth says he was just picking up cigarette butts from an ashtray.

It's now up to the D.A.'s office to decide whether to file charges.
