"Smarty" went missing after becoming spooked one day, jumping from his guardian's arms when he was just a year old.

The folks at the Marin Humane Society were able to reunite the microchipped cat with his family after someone brought him in as unclaimed stray.

Smarty's owner Aaron and Leah Lamstein were ecstatic to see their beloved cat again. "Wow you've gotten so huge! You poor thing & we haven't seen you in so long," exclaimed Leah.

"Smarty has indeed lived up to his namesake," says Carrie Harrington, Marin Humane Society communications manager. "Certainly a bit of street smarts helped this kitty survive outdoors on his own for all this time. We hope this story will serve as an important reminder of how important it is to microchip your pets!"
