Cat stuffed in suitcase; abandoned at airport

BURLINGAME, CA -- The Peninsula Humane Society announced Friday that a Persian cat found stuffed inside a suitcase and abandoned at a Burlingame hotel parking lot will soon be up for adoption.

"Duffy," a smoky gray male named after the duffel bag in which he was abandoned, was discovered by residents dog-walking near the Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport-Burlingame on the afternoon of April 5, according to humane society spokesman Scott Delucchi. Curiosity led the passersby to check inside the bag where they discovered Duffy, relatively healthy despite being left there for what hotel staff believe was more than eight hours.

A volunteer brought the cat to the Peninsula Humane Society/SPCA where he has been living since then. Duffy hasn't yet been available for adoption in order to leave time for a remote possibility that his owner would come forward to claim him. Delucchi reported that no such claim has been made to the humane society or to the staff at the Embassy Suites.

"We're assuming that whoever dumped the cat didn't know animal abandonment is illegal," Delucchi said in a statement.

Duffy will be available for adoption through the Peninsula Humane Society beginning Monday, which can be contacted at (650) 340-7022.
