SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The South San Francisco Police Department will soon begin a yearlong campaign to end drunken driving by increasing DUI checkpoints, staking out repeated DUI offenders, increasing patrols and conducting court stings.

The efforts are possible because of a $137,588 grant the department received for 2010 from the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to South San Francisco police.
The grant will also be used to educate the public on the dangers of drunken driving.
In 2008, 1,029 people died in California due to alcohol-impaired crashes, said Christopher J. Murphy, director of the Office of Traffic Safety. This was a 9 percent decrease from 2007.
"This grant will help keep that trend going by getting drunk drivers off the roadways of South San Francisco," Murphy said.
