Organizer pairs 'cubs' with 'cougars'

MILLBRAE, CA -- A man who organized a convention in the Bay Area last year in honor of older women attracted to younger men is bringing another event to the region this month, this time focusing on the younger men who he says are the less-heralded half of the May-December romantic pair.

The National Cub Convention, scheduled for Jan. 30 in Millbrae, is sponsored by Rich Gosse's Society of Single Professionals, which defines a "cougar" as an older woman who is attracted to younger men, or "cubs."

The event comes after the Cougar Convention Gosse held in August that he said brought about 1,000 people to a hotel in Palo Alto that could only fit 400 people into its venue.

He said he hopes to get a similarly large crowd to this month's event, but doesn't think it will match the size of the Cougar Convention.

Gosse said while there has been a lot of talk about "cougars" in popular culture, including "Cougar Town," a television show on ABC, "cubs are sort of an oversight, so we want them to be the focus this time."

The "cubs," legally single men between 21 and 40 years old, will compete for the title of Cutest Cub in America.

All the women at the event will each get one vote, and the man receiving the most votes will receive prizes that include a International Cougar Cruise to either the Mexican Riviera or the Bahamas, and the DVD "Spread," which features Ashton Kutcher and is about a "cub" and many older women.

The 7 p.m. event is scheduled for Jan. 30 at the Clarion Hotel, located at 401 E. Millbrae Ave. The convention will feature a keynote address by Gosse called "Why Younger Men Are Better" at 7:30 p.m., and end with a dance party from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The cost of the convention is $20 and dressy attire, such as a coat and tie, is recommended.

"Cubs are the Rodney Dangerfield of our society, they don't get no respect," Gosse said. "We're going to get them the recognition they've deserved all these years."
