Police looking for vandals who tagged Fox Elementary

BELMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- An elementary school on the peninsula was covered with graffiti and it is even more heartbreaking because the school was extensively remodeled over the summer. Just two weeks into the school year students and teachers are wondering who could do such a thing.

Fox Elementary School in Belmont was hit by vandals sometime between midnight Wednesday and 6:30 a.m. Thursday. The taggers turned the school into their personal playground, leaving messages and drawings on the blacktop, tables, curbs and outbuildings.

"There was like a zombie face and there was a note that says, 'Drop it like it's hot,'" said student Lindsay Liu. Some of the kids, like Lindsay, were really upset by it. "I thought that bad guys came to our school in the night and then painted it with graffiti."

Parents can't understand why anyone would want to deface the school.

"This whole school got remodeled over the summer and it looked really beautiful so it's just really disappointing somebody would do that," said Grace Liu, Lindsay's mother.

"Little kids play here, they don't need to see all that graffiti all over," said Maggie Diab, a parent.

Some of the graffiti has already been painted over but you can still see some of the red spray paint in between the cracks in the shed. The recent paint job is just a temporary solution to cover up the graffiti and a contractor will be coming to do a more permanent fix.

It's still unknown how much it will cost to get rid of all the graffiti, but the dollar amount does make a difference.

"If the cost of repairing and repainting gets high enough, this could be potentially charged as a felony," said Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran.

Police are hoping someone will come forward with information about who's responsible, so they can be held accountable.
