SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Ten people are burned out of their home after a raging fire overnight in San Francisco. The fire was so massive that there was confusion inside and outside.
The Red Cross is assisting with the residents who were left homeless from the fire. It may take weeks or even months before the residents can get back into the home.
At about 2:30 a.m. on Friday morning the flames broke out on Baker Street near Golden Gate Avenue. There was a fear that the fire was going to jump to another home because the lots are so compacted. In fact the neighbors, in all the confusion of the fire and smoke, thought it was their house on fire. The firefighters knew which house it was coming from and the knocked it down before it could spread.
There were 10 people living in the house and 9 of them are students. One of the students tried to run to grab his computer, but his desk was on fire and that burned his hand. That was one of two injuries, the other was a woman who came out of the house next door to a wall of smoke; she has asthma and needed to be treated.
The victims of the fire will be going to a friend's house. The residents were given an offer to stay at a bed and breakfast owned by the owner of the house.
"There were flames shooting out of the downstairs bedrooms and it was so hot that by the time I got to the midway-bottom of the stairs - you couldn't even throw water on it. I just threw the bucket on it and then ran up and grabbed some clothes and then ran outside," said John Usher, fire victim.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the firefighters are saying it does not look suspicious.
