SF water main valve in breaks, shoots geyser in air

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 2-inch valve on a water main broke this morning in San Francisco's Outer Mission neighborhood, creating a geyser of water that could be seen by commuters on a BART train traveling on nearby tracks, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokeswoman said.

The broken valve was reported around 7:45 a.m. near the intersection of Alemany Boulevard and Niagara Avenue, SFPUC spokeswoman Suzanne Gautier said.

Water from the valve, part of a 16-inch feeder main, "shot up rather dramatically," but crews responded and "choked it off really quickly," Gautier said.

No customers were impacted by the broken valve, and the geyser did not cause any road closures or flood any nearby buildings, she said.

Repairs to the valve are expected to be completed by noontime, she said.
