Greg Suhr to be named new SFPD chief

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Sources tell ABC7 News that a new police chief has been chosen in San Francisco -- Greg Suhr.

Suhr currently commands the Bayview station in the southeastern corner of the city. He has had an up and down career. Suhr was one of several top officers indicted and then cleared of all charges in the Fajitagate scandal nearly a decade ago.

"The Police Commission with the mayor vetted that, and I'm sure thoroughly. I also believe in the power of redemption when somebody has been such a long time public servant and I think that Greg Suhr has proved himself over the years as well as any of those kind of transgressions and I think he'll be a solid police chief," said San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi.

Suhr served as a deputy chief until then-Chief Heather Fong demoted him to captain in 2005.

Lee will make Suhr's appointment official during a news conference on Wednesday.

Suhr will replace Godown, who has led the SFPD since January when former Chief George Gascon was appointed District Attorney.
