Final plans announced for Golden Gate anniversary

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Organizers of the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th anniversary celebration announced their final plans for the official day.

It's going to be completely different than the 50th anniversary, there will be no bridge walk, but just about everything else you can imagine.

"Seventy-five is a big birthday, so we're going to have a big party to celebrate our favorite local icon the Golden Gate Bridge," David Shaw of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

May 27 is the day and the festivities run all day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Fort Point to Pier 39. Artists will create bridge-inspired works at Fort Point. A history tent and main stage will be set up at Crissy Field and a water craft parade will dominate the Bay. There's no way to know how many thousands of people will show up, but one thing is for sure:

"Driving is crowded down here on an average weekend and with all the crowds we are expecting, it will be pretty much impossible to park. There will be no event parking," said Foghorn Creative Director Don Richard.

Organizers suggest walking, biking or taking public transit. Come prepared and bring your patience.

"It will be a slow exit, so people should come well prepared, warmly dressed, well hydrated and plan for a long slow exit," said Richard.

A small price to pay for a free, once in a life time event.

"Innovation, inspiration and aspiration -- they said it couldn't be built and here we are 75 years later celebrating it," said Shaw.

The grand finale is a fireworks show. You'll be able to see it best from Fort Point to East Marina Green, but there are several other good vantage points as well.
