SF officials highlight summer programs for kids

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The school year may be over, but San Francisco officials are looking for ways to prevent brain drain among kids.

Today San Francisco officials hosted hundreds of young kids for some fun in front of City Hall. Officials are highlighting all the different city programs offered for kids in order to keep their brains engaged during the summer.

"Learning a new sport or learning a new skill engages the brain and it actually helps a young person develop all those pro-social behaviors," Department of Children, Youth & Families Maria Su said.

A recent study found kids forget about three months worth of instruction during the long summer break.

Brain drain is even more pronounced among low-income kids who don't have a chance to attend camps or visit museums.
