Starving African children

CARE International is making a Bay Area plea for help for children and families in West Africa's Sahel region.

A long-term drought and civil unrest has plunged the region into a humanitarian crisis, affecting a staggering 18 million people. Families are at risk of severe malnutrition or even starving to death.

The vice president of CARE's international programs, Abby Maxman says the situation is heartbreaking. "Who are so resilient, so strong, who survive in the face of such adversity, still struggle just to feed themselves," she says.

Maxman will be joining Congresswoman Barbara Lee from Oakland and ABC7 News anchor Cheryl Jennings to talk about the crisis in the African Sahel tonight at the World Affairs Council Auditorium.

When: Monday, August 6
Time: Networking Reception: 6:15 7:00 p.m., Program: 7:00 8:00 p.m.
Where: World Affairs Council Auditorium, 312 Sutter Street, San Francisco
