San Francisco scientists are excited about a giant discovery they made this month during an exploration off the Golden Gate.

The National Marine Sanctuary sent a rover into a steep underwater cliff about 10 miles west of the Farallon Islands. They came upon a possible new sponge species.

They're calling it the "catcher's mitt" sponge because they found it just as the Giants' Buster Posey hit a grand slam last week to win the series against Cincinnati.

The scientists were listening to the game as they explored the ocean depths.
