Man arrested for Muni bus vandalism

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police have arrested the man in a photograph that appears to use a steel barricade to smash in the windows of a Muni bus during an out-of-control celebration following the Giants World Series victory Sunday night.

San Francisco resident Gregory Tyler Graniss, 22, was booked on charges of felony vandalism and injuring or destroying a passenger transit vehicle.

Police took 35 people into custody Sunday night.

The district attorney's office says of the 11 cases it's received so far, they are prosecuting nine of them. Most are for various felonies, including assaulting police officers, arson and stealing an iPhone.

"We expect additional cases coming to us, including some of the cases we've seen where there have been damage to city vehicles, property around the city," District Attorney George Gascon said.

It will be a double-barreled prosecution. The city attorney says if there was vandalism, he'll take them to civil court.

"We will go after you civilly and seek restitution in damages coming out of your pocketbook for any damage you do to city property," Dennis Herrera said.

The vandalism and trouble happened late at night. They shot off fireworks and barrel bombs, overturned cars, broke windows on a Muni bus and then set it on fire.

"The other night, there were 70, not 17, but 7-0 fires around town to varying degrees," San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said.

Suhr says he and his officers are ready for Wednesday's parade and the massive crowd which may number 1 million.

Police will be out in force with rapid response teams to deal quickly with problems like the ones that occurred Sunday night. There will be a police-fire strike force to prevent troublemakers from hijacking and torching Muni buses and patrol cars will have fire extinguishers.

And above all, Suhr says there will be zero tolerance for booze.

"If someone has an open container, it's going to be seized or dumped; people could be ticketed for public consumption of alcohol," he said. World Series Parade

The team will be honored with a ticker-tape parade Wednesday morning. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced Sunday night that the city will salute the World Series champions just as they did in 2010 when a downtown parade concluded with a celebration at Civic Center Plaza.

The parade will start at 11 a.m. at the foot of Market Street, then follow Market Street to Civic Center. The mayor's office and the Giants will announce more details in the next couple of days.
