SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Saint Patrick's Day is Sunday, but the Irish celebration is a weekend event in San Francisco.
For the 162nd time, the annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade marched down Market Street to Civic Center. Flutes, bagpipes, community groups, and soccer teams all walked proudly through the city.
Hundreds of people turned out to watch. It's a holiday when everyone can claim to be Irish, maybe some a little more than others.
"Unfortunately Ireland's 6,000 miles away," parade spectator Jimmy Wilson said. "And he is a little Irish-American baby. So it's really nice to come out here, see everybody celebrating, and also just knowing that, like, Irish culture and the people get celebrated like worldwide."
The theme of this year's festival is "Honoring Celtic Women." Organizers claim the annual celebration in San Francisco is the largest in the country west of the Mississippi.
