Police chief takes credit for drop in SJ homicides

SAN JOSE (KGO) -- After a deadly surge, San Jose hasn't seen any homicides for a week. And the police chief is taking credit.

It had been one of the most violent stretches in the city's history -- eight lives in 11 days. Since August 23, the police chief transferred officers, authorized overtime, and flooded known gang hubs with police. This resulted in more than two dozen arrests.

Police Chief Chris Moore tells the San Jose Mercury News that those efforts are working. However, Mario Maciel, superintendent of the Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force, concedes the reason may be more elusive. He says, "Don't assume there's less violence because there were no homicides." And notes that it could be because "a bullet missed by half an inch."
