SAN JOSE -- A pedestrian was struck and killed at a San Jose intersection early this morning, a police spokesman said.
Emergency responders went to the intersection of Jackson and Alum Rock avenues after receiving a report of a collision involving a pedestrian just after 6 a.m., San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said.
Firefighters and paramedics found a man who had been struck by two separate vehicles, Morales said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene about 6:15 a.m.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a dark-colored sedan had struck the man as he was crossing the street, Morales said.
It did not appear that the victim had been in a crosswalk, and the sedan left the scene heading west on Alum Rock Avenue, he said.
A second vehicle also struck the victim, Morales said. The driver of that vehicle stopped and was cooperating with police.
Investigators remained at the scene as of 8:15 a.m.
The accident has prompted the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority to reroute bus lines 23, 70 and 522, VTA officials said.
Riders are advised to call VTA customer service at (408) 321-2300 for more information about the detours.
