Karr Could Face Child Porn Charges In Sonoma Co.
KGO - Aug. 29 (KGO) -- There is new evidence this morning about the depths of John Mark Karr's obsession with the JonBenet Ramsey murder case.
Boulder County authorities have released audiotapes of his bizarre statements to police. Although Karr won't be charged with JonBenet's murder, he is still facing charges in the Bay Area.
John Mark Karr will now become California's problem. Sonoma county prosecutors now want him to answer to charges of child pornography. But we haven't heard the last of his interest in JonBenet Ramsey.
New tapes reveal more disturbing details in John Mark Karr's own words. One recording of Karr is from phone conversations he had with a University of Colorado professor.
The tapes were released last night when the affidavit was unsealed. As if to explain why they focused on him, the Boulder District Attorney has released wiretap audio from John Mark Karr.
During his questioning, he told authorities he was with JonBenet when she died.
John Karr, Wiretap Audio: "I can't take it anymore that after 10 years, I lost her and I can't even visit her grave anymore. I can't rush to her mother's side who requests seeing me, it's killing me right now.?
But his story fell apart when DNA evidence revealed he wasn't at the crime the scene.
Seth Temin, Public Defender: "We are deeply distressed that they took this man and dragged him here from Thailand with no forensic evidence."
John Mark Karr's journey from Thailand to Colorado will now take him to the Bay Area. He's been on the run from Sonoma County since December 2001 on charges of possessing child porn on his computer.
An acquaintance who attended church with Karr at that time says he always seemed peculiar.
Dennis Melfa, Acquaintance of Karr: "He wasn't like a real person, he was sort of acting all the time. He obviously had a fixation with little girls, in particular little girls who got murdered.
Experts say that fascination may be what led him to falsely lead prosecutors to believe he killed JonBenet.
The Boulder District Attorney is expected to explain her decisions at a news conference later today. But the newly released tapes do some of that explaining for her.
John Karr, Wiretap Audio: "At this point I am doing this for the family. Otherwise I can just live my life in obscurity as I have. Why take that risk? I don't know, I am compelled to do it for the strangest reasons, for JonBenet in a way to shout to the world ?that's my little girl, she's mine."
The Sonoma County District Attorney told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that even if Karr is convicted in Sonoma County he has probably already served most of his jail time.
But a conviction would require him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
