On Tuesday, the senator chaired a hearing on the status of levees in New Orleans.
She was talking to Brigadier General Michael Walsh about delays in rebuilding when she interrupted him and asked him to get specific.
Here's their exchange:
Sen. Boxer: "Why has it been delayed?"
Brig. Gen. Walsh: "Ma'am, at the LACPR..."
Sen. Boxer: "You know, do me a favor. Could say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?'"
Brig. Gen. Walsh: "Yes."
Sen. Boxer: "It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it. Yes, thank you."
Brig. Gen. Walsh: "Yes, senator."
Those on the right say Boxer's comments reveal a clear anti-military bias.
Army protocol says it is acceptable to call senators sir or ma'am, in addition to senator.
