SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24, 2007 (KGO) (KGO) -- Many saluted baseball's new, all-time home run king, Barry Bonds, during a noontime ceremony along San Francisco's waterfront Friday.
Two Giants Hall of Famers, Bonds' godfather Willie Mays and Willie McCovey, joined civic leaders for today's festivities at Justin Herman Plaza.
"Willie Mays and McCovey and my father that's no longer here, I want to thank you for your guidance. I want to thank you for your education about this game of baseball," said Bonds.
Bonds also received tributes from some of his current teammates.
The Giants presented Bonds with a memento from the night he broke Hank Aaron's record -- the home plate he stepped on after hitting home run number 756 earlier this month.
"I just hope that I was able to inspire some of you young kids that are here today. And I hope it's a child here in San Francisco, I really do hope I inspired you to shatter my record here in San Francisco," said Bonds.
Bonds also received the key to the city from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
