GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gators coach Billy Donovan has reinstated junior point guard Scottie Wilbekin after a three-game suspension for violating team rules.Wilbekin had inherited the starting point guard job after Erving Walker graduated.
But Donovan announced on Nov. 8 -- one day before the Gators played Georgetown in the Navy-Marine Corps Classic aboard the USS Bataan at Mayport Naval Station -- that Wilbekin was suspended indefinitely. Donovan would not give a reason for the suspension, other than to say it was not because of any criminal or NCAA issues. The 6-foot-2 Wilbekin will not start Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee in Tampa, Fla. Wilbekin sat out the Georgetown game, which was canceled at halftime because of condensation on the court, and the 10th-ranked Gators' victories over Alabama State and Wisconsin. Wilbekin had averaged 1.6 assists and 2.5 per game in his first two seasons as the primary backup to Walker, who left as the school's all-time assists leader.
