You've probably heard of swimming with the sharks, but how about skating with them? Wednesday night several families got to hit the ice with the San Jose Sharks.

"Our players and our staff have essentially adopted 42 families and fulfilled their Christmas wish list," said Kelly Esrey from the Sharks Foundation.

It's the Sharks Foundation's annual Holiday Assist Party and they brought smiles to some deserving children and their families who are a part of the Healthy Start Family Support Center.

"We've bought gifts for some less fortunate families to give them a Merry Christmas. Obviously they can't afford some of the gifts that we're able to, so to give back to them and see some happy faces tonight is a great event," said Sharks center Logan Couture.

The night with the Sharks was exactly what Gloria Chavez and her family needed.

"I went through breast cancer this year and things were really, real tough and so this has been a blessing for my family and I to be able to be a part of this," said Chavez.

"I was shocked. I didn't really think this was going to happen," said Chavez's son David Archuletta.

Her boys got to skate with SJ Sharkie Claus and players like left wings Frazer McLaren and Jamie McGinn. They did arts and crafts and even had dinner with their very own Shark -- goalie Thomas Greiss.

"Just sitting having dinner with them, that was the best part," said Archuletta.

But what do you talk about when you have dinner with a professional hockey player? Recipient Brian Gaytan knew exactly what to say to his Shark, Ryane Clowe.

"We talked about how old was he and he was a really good athlete and we were a fan of him," said Gaytan.

After dinner, came the presents.

"I opened one and I got a Casio watch and I really liked it," said Gaytan.

Chavez's kids didn't open anything right away.

"Maybe we'll open one of them, but we'll save the rest for Christmas," said Archuletta.

"Christmas time is a great time to give back and to see the joy on the kids' eyes when they see these presents is pretty good," said Sharks center Joe Thornton.
