Lawmaker wants more technology in classrooms

SACRAMENTO, CA (KGO) -- A Bay Area assemblyman says it is time to bring more technology into California classrooms.

Apple, Google and Microsoft were all at the state capitol Wednesday, showing off their high tech tools for the classroom.

Assm. Tom Torlakson, D-Martinez, says California ranks 47th out of the 50 states for its use of education technology.

Torlakson, who is running for state education superintendent, says California should think about buying fewer textbooks and more technology.

"We can update so much more quickly," Torlakson said. "Think of our history textbooks; you buy sets of thousands of those books for a school district and they don't include the Iraq War, Afghanistan, they don't have information that we have a new president of the United States."

Torlakson did not offer any ideas on how schools might pay for the technology.
