Eggs being laid on Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

There is a disturbing new finding that may put more pressure on California and other states to do more to reduce plastic trash.

Researchers from UCLA and Scripps traveled to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - the huge floating plastic debris field between Hawaii and California. They found a marine insect that tends to lay its eggs on floating wood and seashells now lays its eggs on top of bits of plastic. They also found the garbage patch has increased a hundred times since the early 1970's.
