ABC7 News, YouTube team up for local project

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- For more than 60 years ABC7 News has been a leader in innovation and news coverage. But how we report news is ever evolving. Beginning Thursday, YouTube and ABC7 News are teaming to bring you news like never before.

"This is the first time that YouTube has teamed up with a local television station," YouTube News Manager Olivia Ma said.

Though YouTube sees video uploads from around the globe, often the most poignant videos are the ones that relate directly to the community you live in. From the Oscar Grant shooting to fights on Muni, user generated content is increasingly playing a role in how we report the news.

"Today we are launching ABC7 uReport powered by YouTube," Ma said.

For the first time, a television station is working closely with YouTube, the Internet's largest video-sharing website. ABC7 will use YouTube Direct to collect pictures and video from people all over the San Francisco Bay Area about the stories that matter to them. E-mail pictures or video to uReport@kgo-tv.com, or upload them to the site directly at uReport.abc7news.com.

"This is a project that aims to cover the San Francisco Bay Area as comprehensively as possible using citizen reported news, videos and photos," Ma said.

ABC7 wants you to see your pictures or video of breaking news and extreme weather. Forward stories to us about interesting people in your community and let us know what matters to you. ABC7 producers will review all of the content and feature newsworthy stories on air, on our website at abc7news.com and on our YouTube channel (youtube.com/abc7news).

"All Bay Area residents are invited to participate in the project by documenting the news and events happening around them," Ma said.
