NEWARK, Calif., Nov. 28, 2007 - BCN -- A big rig hauling old cars went off the roadway in Newark this morning and traffic on southbound Interstate Highway 880 is expected to be congested until about 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The solo-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 880 just north of the eastbound state Highway 84 off ramp in Newark, CHP Officer Kevin Kroncke said.
The accident occurred at 1:38 a.m. and a Sig-alert was issued at 3:37 a.m., he said. The No. 4 lane is blocked.
Traffic is backed up almost to Interstate Highway 238 in Hayward. The CHP has authorized that the HOV lane can be used by all drivers to relieve congestion, he said.
The driver, who suffered major injuries, was transported to the hospital, Kroncke said.
