A brand new ferry service between the East Bay and the Peninsula starts this morning. The best part is commuters can ride the sleek new ferries for free this week.
It's the first new Bay Area ferry service in more than two decades. Commuters can hop aboard in Alameda or Jack London Square in Oakland. About 40 minutes later they will arrive at the new Oyster Point Ferry terminal in South San Francisco. Starting next week the ferry rides are $7 each way, though tickets are free through Friday this week .
Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, was at a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Oyster Point Ferry Terminal to help launch the service. Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, South San Francisco Mayor Richard Gabardino, and South San Francisco City Council members Kevin Mullin and Pedro Gonzales also attended.
Peninsula based Genentech will be providing shuttles from the Oyster Point terminal to its headquarters.
Coffee and muffins are being served in the morning and beer and wine will be served during the evening commute.
