Moveable median barrier approved for Golden Gate

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Golden Gate Bridge board voted unanimously to install a $26 million moveable median barrier between north and southbound lanes -- to prevent head on collisions.

To get it into place, the bridge will have to be shut down for 52-hours -- a Friday night to Monday morning, likely to happen in October or November of next year. Most of the money is coming from the state, some from the feds and some from bridge tolls.

The toll could be going up; the Bridge District is looking at a projected $140 million deficit over the next five years. Board members will spend the next few months working out options and alternatives and could ask for an increase by January. It would take five to six months for it to go through the public hearing process.
