AC Transit asks for cooling off period to avert strike

AC Transit workers stand on the brink of a strike. They are a little more than 24 hours away from a threatened walkout.

AC Transit managers have asked Gov. Jerry brown to impose a 60-day cooling off period to delay a strike. Brown's office is still reviewing the request.

"We have had two tentative agreements; both of them have been rejected," AC Transit spokesperson Clarence Johnson said. "We have not heard anything from the union since that rejection in terms of what they want."

"I feel sorry for our passengers," Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192 Vice President Ed Nash said. "I apologize to them, but we're at a point now. Backs are against the wall, we have to do what we have to do."

The two sides disagree on how much bus drivers and mechanics should pay for their medical benefits. AC Transit wants them to pay $283 per family, per month. The union claims that's too much.
