As part of our investigation of class sizes in the Houston area, we analyzed class size averages for every school in the Houston region. On the map below you can click any school to see the averages, or find yours faster with the search box.
A few notes, the averages are from fall 2011, and since then some teachers have been hired and numbers may have shifted.
Also below we have an excerpt from our interview with Dr. Jerome Freiberg. He's an education expert at the University of Houston and reviewed recent class size research for us. His explanation of how just a few kids more hurts overall learning is a good one and we wanted to share it.
We heard from several of you after our story aired Wednesday night. You told us the averages seemed low. It's likely due to the fact that state regulations allow districts to include special education classes in their averages. Special education classes are usually far smaller and that drives averages lower. We tried to get data to do averages on our own, but it proved too difficult to average more than 1,500 local schools.
