Chef Hugo Ortega, executive chef/owner of Hugo's was born in Mexico City and immigrated to Houston in 1984. He faced many obstacles, including unemployment in his first years. Eventually, "the great opportunity" of his life came. A friend took Hugo to Backstreet Café to be a busboy/dishwasher. Impressed with Hugo's positive attitude and drive, Tracy Vaught, the owner of Backstreet, moved him to the kitchen line. He diligently learned all aspects of the kitchen. Cadillac Culinary Masters - Cadillac and ABC-13 have come together to unveil a new series recognizing Culinary Masters in the Houston area. This partnership was created in an effort to pay tribute to Houston's finest chefs. To qualify for this prestigious honor, Chefs must meet the criteria established by our panel of judges. Each month, the selected chef will feature a 'Cadillac Culinary Masters' inspired menu with proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank.
