Kiran Verma was born in Jharsuguda, Orissa, in northern India.The daughter of a government worker, Kiran's family moved from town to town. She quickly learned to adapt to new environments and absorbed the food and culture of each area. As a child Kiran would sneak away from her studies to visit the kitchen. Kiran's mother had hired help at home. Those men and women from Nepal, Punjab and other parts of the sub-continent, became Kiran's mentors, educating her about the art of combining herbs and spices, and unlocking flavors. When it came to cooking, there were no set guidelines and Verma learned to cook based on creativity and taste. She came to Houston at the age of 18 and explored the local cuisine, cooking for her friends. She quickly made these recipes her own and was soon offered a management position at an Indian restaurant. Cadillac and ABC-13 have come together to recognize Culinary Masters in the Houston area. This partnership was created in an effort to pay tribute to Houston's finest chefs. To qualify for this prestigious honor, Chefs must meet the criteria established by our panel of judges. Each month, the selected chef will feature a 'Cadillac Culinary Masters' inspired menu with proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank. The donations from the 2012 Cadillac Culinary Masters Series provided meals for over 30,000 local families.
