Woman fakes her own death to get out of speeding ticket

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Fines for parking tickets can add up and are usually a pain to pay but police say one Iowa woman went too far to avoid a fine.

Investigators say Kimberly Du faked her own death. She allegedly used an obituary made to look like it came from the Des Moines Register website. It says she died in a car wreck. Du even faked her own mother's signature on a letter sent to the courthouse confirming her apparent death.

Bob Rigg with the Drake Law Clinic said, "The fact that she did it, she probably didn't sit down and think, 'Wow, I'm going to get out of a simple misdemeanor by committing a class A felony.' "

Du was caught when she got a speeding ticket last month. That's when the investigation was started. She now faces prison time.
