DALLAS, TX -- The retirement of a North Texas teacher means he's concluding a 40-year streak of wearing the same 1970s-era polyester shirt and brown sweater vest for his school photograph.
Dallas Morning News columnist Steve Blow's account Sunday of Dale Irby's photo streak soon went viral.
The wardrobe repeat began as an accident. The 63-year-old Garland resident says when he received his photo in his second year at the school he was embarrassed to discover he'd worn the same outfit as the first year.
His wife dared him to wear it again the third year, then Irby thought five would be funny. He says, "After five pictures it was like, `Why stop?"'
Irby retired this year as an elementary school physical education teacher in the Richardson school district, north of Dallas.
