Save money, make your own cleaning supplies
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Spring is a great time to get your home in tip top shape, and if you are thinking about going out and buying a trunk load of cleaning supplies, don't do it.
You have seen the cleaning supply aisle at the store. There is a product for just about every nook and cranny in your home. But our super thrifty shopper says don't waste your money on pricey products when you can make your own!
With just a few ingredients like baking soda, vinegar and salt, Nora Kapche says you can make your own cleaning supplies for pennies on the dollar.
"We can take what we already have, basic ingredients and still get the cleaning results that we want," Kapche said. "And therefore, you don't have to go to the store and buy those products."
Now it's time to create our cleaning supplies.
First up is a basic scrubber, which is much like Ajax. For this recipe: it's one cup of borax, one cup of baking soda and one cup of salt. Mix it up and you are ready to scrub. A little goes a long way.
This all-purpose scrubber can also be used to clean counter tops, toilets and tubs.
If you are looking to deep clean your oven, Kapche says simply sprinkle baking soda, spray with water and let it sit overnight.
"With the sealed oven, it will create a chemical reaction and it will loosen all that grease and grime," Kapche said.
Then wipe down your oven clean.
To clean the microwave, mix ½ cup vinegar and ½ cup water in a microwave safe bowl. Bring it to a boil then leave the cup in the microwave for a few minutes to deodorize and loosen all the dried splatters of food.
"It's made everything really easy to clean," Kapche said.
Then wipe clean with a sponge.
Nora says a simple way to clean your window and mirrors is to use vinegar and water in a spray bottle. All you do is spray and wipe. It's super easy and a quarter of the cost of those window cleaners.
The window and mirror cleaner recipe is a half-and-half solution of vinegar and water.
Finally to deep clean and deodorize your garbage disposal, place ½ cup of baking soda in your garbage disposal with a ½ cup hot white vinegar then pour down the disposal. Let sit for five minutes then rinse and run the garbage disposal.
