HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Your chance to save money on school supplies and clothing is finally here. The state's tax-free weekend gets underway today.
This has been an annual event since 1999. Today through Sunday, shoppers will be exempt from paying state and local taxes on most clothing and shoes priced under $100 and school supplies.
The state comptroller's office says shoppers could save about $8 for every $100 they spend and a total of about $78.9 million during the three-day sales tax break.
Not everyone views the shopping weekend as a holiday. The nonpartisan research group Tax Foundation says the rollbacks don't save families much money and instead, impose expenses on both consumers and businesses.
Still, if you want to take advantage of the savings, you'll have until late Sunday night.
