Retired teacher honored by HISD

Thursday, October 09, 2008

Hazel Hainsworth Young was honored for her 80 plus years of dedication as a teacher and volunteer.

HISD honored a retired teacher for 80 plus years of dedication.

Last night in northwest Houston, HISD's school board awarded Hazel Hainsworth Young with a "Commendation for Meritorious Service" award. She's 103 years old and started her teaching career in 1926, as the first teacher of Latin at Jack Yates High School.

Last night, she had some advice for young and aspiring teachers.

"To love them and you still be the boss, and to let them know they are supposed to do what you say, and you love them and they are supposed to do what you say, not the teacher doing what the children say," she said.

Young retired back in 1972, but continued volunteering for years.
