Ted Nugent creates a stir at Gov. Perry's inauguration

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Not everyone who attended GOP Governor Rick Perry's inaugural ball in Austin appreciated rocker Ted Nugent's performance.

Nugent -- using machine guns as props -- appeared onstage Tuesday evening wearing a cut-off T-shirt emblazoned with the Confederate flag. Nugent shouted some remarks about non-English speakers that were offensive to some in the audience.

But Perry spokesman Robert Black downplayed the incident, calling Nugent "a good friend of the governor's." Black says Perry put no restrictions on what Nugent would play at the black-tie ball.

GOP strategist Royal Masset called Nugent "a horrible choice."

Gary Bledsoe with the Texas NAACP says whenever someone sports the Confederate battle flag -- many Texans will be offended.

A Nugent spokeswoman says the hunting and gun-rights advocate wasn't available for comment -- because he was out hunting.
