(10/02/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) -- In a recent Health Check segment, we reported on a test of five different hand sanitizer products and their effectiveness at killing germs.
The manufacturer of one of those products, Invisible Armor, later contacted us to dispute our report based on the fact that their product is a topical cream and that its main active ingredient is the antibiotic Triclosan.
They point out that the Invisible Armor products do not contain alcohol, which is the main active ingredient of many gel based products, and that the Invisible Armor products work differently than the other products that were part of our test.
Invisible Armor contends that because their product is designed to provide protection for up to four hours, even after repeated hand washings, the Invisible Armor product provides longer-lasting protection than the others, and that we should have employed a different procedure to test its long-term effectiveness.
They also sent us a study by a University of North Carolina microbiologist which found that Invisible Armor was effective against many bacteria for up to four hours. The study concluded that the product's "antibacterial ingredients help prevent a variety of infections, as well as their spread."
